Bathroom Vanities: What Are They Made From
When it comes to choosing the right bathroom vanity for the home, there are several things to look at. Besides the design of the vanity, there are the materials that needs to be decided upon. In renovation or in building a new bathroom, homeowners must decide what is the best option for both the home and the bank account in the long term. The vanity must stand in place for years and it is understandable that it is a costly process. One can go cheap, but it has its drawbacks, even though the best type is way out of the budget. Here are some things to know about the production materials.
Particle Boards
This is the cheapest of them all; a composite sheet material made from wood pieces and glue and then pressed and heated into sheets. Listed by the size of their particles and how dense it can be, particle boards may turn out stronger than others boards, so it’s a roulette. Price wise, it does cost less to make and buy, which is a major downside because the cheaper the good, the less the quality. One upside is that it can be easily covered with some wooden veneer and laminate. What else can be bad? One, particle boards can sags under the heavy weight of anything solid, especially hardened countertops made from granite or quartz. It is also an easily damageable piece from water and steam. The amount of steam that is made from a shower or running hot water in the sink will affect the board, making it more vulnerable to breaking apart.
Using Plywood
Plywood, on the other hand, is the more likable piece because it is a whole lot stronger. Plywood is simply layered wood glued together to make sheets of them. They also come in various qualities and how it is thick. A slight issue with them is that gaps can be spotted between the layers, either through missed gluing or improper dry gluing. The plywood is also not necessarily like granite, which is pretty, so it has a cleared, thin plastic within the pattern; plywood is the most pretty kind of wood and one that does not damage or fall apart easily. Top grade plywood is sustainable for a lengthy period, even more than solid wood because plywood doesn’t move around from any moisture, humidity, or temperature changes compared to solid wood.
MDF
Also referred to as “medium density fireboard,” MDF is produced wood that is dense and sturdy, made from smushed bits of wood under high heat. It is fairly inexpensive, smooth, doesn’t produce splinters, and can hold onto any paint. The downside is that is can be damaged by water, no nails can be put in because of the glue within it, and the maintenance is costly. It is a good in-between if plywood is too expensive or if particle boards is too cheap.
The bathroom vanity is an essential design with the need to be properly constructed. These are the three main materials built with, but choose wisely at what works the best for your bathroom and its cost.
