A Guide to Vanity Cabinets
Originally a simple wash stand, the vanity cabinets of today have evolved into a beautiful and stylish centerpiece of your bathroom. They cover the sink and its surrounding areas. They not only help hide the plumbing and drainage system of your sink but also provide storage space for your linens. Modern day vanity cabinets are designed in accordance with the overall home style and design. They come in a variety of material ranging from stone to wood. They are generally made waterproof. With bathrooms becoming larger, the vanity cabinets are designed to provide better functionality, style, luxury and beauty.
The vanity cabinets differ from the regular cabinets in its attachment to the sink. For a cabinet to classify as a vanity it should have a sink at its top. Without a sink a cabinet is just a storage space.
Types of Vanity Cabinets
Vanity Cabinets come in 3 types- Wall-mounted, shelf and cabinet type of vanities. The wall mounted type of vanity cabinet is the most popular. Not only is it attractive but it also provides extra space between the floor and cabinet. This type of vanity cabinets are a bit difficult to install and are quite expensive too. The more common type of vanities would be the traditional cabinet style vanities. The simplest of vanities would be the shelf type of vanity stand. It can be mounted anywhere near the mirror or under it. It is not only more affordable option but maintenance friendly too.
Choosing a Vanity Cabinet
Size
Depending upon the space you have you can choose the size of the vanity cabinet. It should be noted though, that bathroom cabinets are smaller in size than kitchen cabinets. The size would also depend upon what all you intend to store in the cabinets. There should be enough space for towels, cosmetics, toiletries, medicines and so on. It should ideally have a combination of shelves and drawers.
Material
Another important aspect while choosing a vanity cabinet would be its material. The cabinets should be made of good quality material so that they do not discolor or crack up due to humidity or moisture. They should also be able to bear the weight of the sink on top of them. Generally the vanity cabinets are made from MDF (medium density fiberboard), particle board, solid plywood or solid wood. Particle board though inexpensive does hold well in humid environs. It tends to sag under heavy load too. MDF is stronger than particle board but requires high maintenance. Plywood is a better choice when it comes to holding up to moisture and humidity. The final choice will of course depend upon your budget and needs.
Cabinet top, handles and hinges
The next would be the choice of the top. It can be made of stone like granite or marble or a glass or porcelain. You can choose from a range of colors and textures that would highlight the aesthetic of the surrounding area. The hinges and handles also come in various styles and designs and you one that you find most comfortable and attractive.
There is a wide range of vanity cabinets available for you to choose from. You can select one that suits your specific requirements and budget. Remember, it is not just a piece of furniture but your style statement.
